GRANT Leadbitter is urging his Middlebrough teammates to finish the season strongly with a win at home to Brighton to take the momentum into the play-offs.

Bournemouth’s 3-0 win over Bolton Wanderers saw them clinch the second automatic promotion place to the Premier League, given they are three points ahead of Boro with a 19-goal advantage.

Boro’s final match sees them take on Brighton at the Riverside, knowing a win would secure them third place.

And captain Leadbitter insists he is relishing the prospect of the play-offs.

He said: “If we finish on 87 and that’s not good enough then it’s not good enough.

“It’s important to win our next game and when you win your next game, that gives you a bit of momentum going into the next one.

“If that’s the play-offs then great – I can’t wait.”

A first appearance in the play-offs for 24 years will now decide the Championship side’s future.

Bournemouth’s win against Bolton on Monday ensured Eddie Howe’s side the second automatic promotion place to the Premier League and the Cherries will now fight it out with Watford on Saturday to see who finishes first.
