Tony Pulis' side were ultimately unsuccessful in their bid to seal an immediate return to the Premier League after losing to Aston Villa in the play-off semi-finals, and have now unveiled the first indication of how their squad for next season will shape up.

With only a handful of senior players out of contract, Pulis hasn't been faced with a wealth of decisions and Boro had already triggered a clause in Fabio Da Silva's contract which will see him stay at the Riverside Stadium for another year.

But the other two first team players whose contracts were set to expire - Martin Cranie and Tomas Mejias - will leave Teesside.

Cranie joined Middlesbrough in January from Huddersfield and the defender will depart at the end of his short-team deal having made nine appearances for the club.

Former Real Madrid stopper Mejias moved to the Riverside in 2014 but failed to make a first team appearance this season having failed to impress during a loan spell at Rayo Vallecano during the 2016/17 campaign.

Mejias' best moment in a Boro shirt came in 2015 when his penalty save heroics helped the side to beat Manchester United in the League Cup.

But now the duo will depart the club - alongside a number of young players.

Loan duo Jack Harrison and Mo Besic will return to Manchester City and Everton respectively following the end of their temporary deals.

Meanwhile, Antonio Barragan, Martin Braithwaite, Julien De Sart and Ashley Fletcher return to Boro after spending time away on loan.
