Middlesbrough transfer news: Striker links, kids set for Riverside test plus coach swaps Championship for League One

Derby County, Stoke City, Charlton Athletic and Brentford are set to do battle with Middlesbrough in the January transfer window as interest in target Sam Cosgrove heats up.

The frontman, who has scored 16 goals for Scottish Premiership side Aberdeen this season, is wanted by Jonathan Woodgate in the winter window to solve Boro’s problems in front of goal. No team has score less goals in the Championship this campaign than Boro.

Meanwhile, Boro's Under-18s will take on Forest Green Rovers in the FA Youth Cup third round proper – and the clash will be played at the Riverside.

Mark Tinkler’s kids will host the lower division outfit on December 11 (kick-off 7pm) the club have announced.

The under-18s enter the competition at this stage.

Elsewhere, former Middlesbrough favourite Dean Whitehead has made a SHOCK coaching switch – swapping a Championship job for League One.

Whitehead, a cult hero on Teesside, has been confirmed in a new first-team coaching position at Sunderland’s third tier rivals Shrewsbury, as he leaves behind his under-19 boss role at Huddersfield Town.

The 37-year-old, who also played for Stoke City, Sunderland, Oxford United and the Terriers before hanging up his boots in 2018, will work under newly-appointed Shrews manager Sam Ricketts. He replaces Joe Parkinson, who last week departed to become new Hartlepool United assistant manager.
