The Boro boss said at the end of last season he wanted to sign around ‘eight or nine’ new players in the coming months, while several first-team players have also left the Riverside.
Strikers Britt Assombalonga and Ashley Fletcher both left the club following four years on Teesside, while goalkeeper Jordan Archer, Nathaniel Mendez-Laing and Marvin Johnson weren’t offered new deals.
While signing new strikers is the priority for Warnock this summer, the Boro boss will also be hoping to improve his options in attacking midfield.
During the 2020/21 season, Boro struggled when playmaker Marcus Tavernier was out injured and didn’t possess a reliable replacement in the No 10 role.
We’ve picked out nine attacking players who Boro could target this summer – who may be available on loan or as permanent transfers.
1. Callum O'Hare - Coventry
A player who made a seamless step up from League One to the Championship last season. O'Hare, 23, registered the most assists, eight, out of the teams who finished in the bottom half of the Championship, standing out for a team which finished 16th. Photo: George Wood
2. Joe Rothwell - Blackburn
The midfielder has a year left on his contract at Blackburn and is a versatile midfielder. The 26-year-old is comfortable with the ball at his feet when he can drive forward in possession. Photo: Alex Davidson
3. Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall - Leicester
During an impressive loan spell at Luton during the 2020/21 season, the 22-year-old created plenty of chances for his team-mates. Dewsbury-Hall finished the season with five assists in 39 league appearances and won Luton's player of the month on multiple occasions. Photo: Naomi Baker
4. Barry Bannan - Sheffield Wednesday
At 31, the Scotland international isn't a long-term option, yet his ability on the ball is obvious. After six years at Wednesday, Bannan is set to become a free agent this summer. Photo: Nathan Stirk
