With less than three weeks to go until their season opener at Fulham on Sunday, August 8, several names have already been linked with a move to the Riverside.
Warnock has pointed out the Teessiders don’t have the biggest budget in the second tier, meaning loans and free agent deals will be considered.
Yet, as shown by the agreement to sign midfielder Martin Payero, there will be funds available if the right deal comes along.
At the end of last season, Warnock said he wanted to sign three new strikers, while the Boro boss has also been looking at wide players to give the team more firepower.
Here are a few names who the Teessiders could target in the next few weeks.
5. Andre Gray - Watford
Maybe a slightly ambitious given the reported £18.5million transfer fee Watford paid for the 26-year-old. Still, Gray appears to be surplus to requirements at Vicarage Road while Boro have been linked with a loan move for the striker.

6. Michael Smith - Rotherham
Someone who was being tracked by Boro earlier in the summer, yet talk has died down since. The 29-year-old impressed for a struggling Rotherham side in the Championship last season and was a handful when the Millers beat Boro back in January.

7. Jerry Yates - Blackpool
During his successful 2020/21 season, when he scored 21 goals to help Blackpool win promotion from League One, the 24-year-old often played as part of a front two. Warnock has previously said he'd like to play with a 4-4-2 system at times, which could suit Yates.

8. John Marquis - Portsmouth
Another player who has impressed in League One and may feel he can step up a league. At 6 ft 1, Marquis is an imposing figure who netted 16 league goals last term.
