After a terrible start to the third-round replay, which saw Giovani lo Celso and Erik Lamela put Spurs 2-0 up inside 15 minutes, Boro recovered to make a game of it in the second half.

George Saville pulled one back for the visitors seven minutes from time to set-up a nervy finish at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.

Here’s how some fans reacted on social media after the game:

@TomGordon97: Gutted to get knocked out the FA Cup tonight, mistakes cost us early on but I left the ground a proud boro fan knowing the lads gave it everything, we move on to Friday now and hopefully bounce back and keep the good run in the league going UTB!

@ChristianDarby9: Much better second half and was nice to at least celebrate a goal in the new stadium. Shame we gave away 2 sloppy goals early in the game. Stadium is unreal. Boro fans were awesome as always. Now for the loooong journey home.

@Davemidd8: Nobody wanted to go to Southampton anyway, onto Friday

@xBlackenedSky: By no means a result to be embarassed about. Thought we were much better second half. Their goals were our own fault but we came out after the break and had a go, which is great to see! Shame not to go forward in the cup but it is what it is!

@Matt_Rowney: It was never a 2-1 game but fair play to Woody and #Boro. After the poor start, it could have gotten ugly and become 4 or 5, but they stuck in there, grew into the game and could of equalised at the end. For a thin squad full of kids and players out of position that ain't bad.

@MfcDannn: Well played lads , Nmecha and Fletcher up top with Tav and Roberts inbehind is gonna he lethal UTB

@We_are_Boro: No disgrace in that performance, especially second half. Credit to the travelling fans, did the club proud!

@cbstar82: After poor start, thought subs had big impact 2nd half and we had a real go! Saville done well last few games. Pleased he's got a goal tonight! Fantastic support from the Boro fans. Could hear them all game! On to Friday now! Looking forward to it!

@SmoggyScholars: Poor first half, but we sorted ourselves out a d made a game of it in the 2nd half. No shame losing to spurs. Our fans were amazing. Now go beat Fulham!

@tait_steven: 2 sloppy goals against a team who look iffy at the back. Had they not been given that early settler may have been different. Gulf in quality is enormous. Line up obviously has one eye on Friday
