Patrick Roberts situation explained as Neil Warnock considers options ahead of Middlesbrough's trip to Stoke City

Boro have a thin squad and are in the thick of a busy fixture schedule, which will continue with a trip to Stoke City this weekend.

Roberts impressed Warnock and the club’s supporters during a loan spell with the Teessiders last season but has made just four appearances since returning to the Riverside from parent club Manchester City.

Warnock has opted to play Djed Spence and Marvin Johnson on the flanks in recent weeks as they provide more defensive cover.

Yet Warnock insists Roberts, 23, will still have a part to play during a long and arduous campaign.

“With a squad like we’ve got, he’ll get chances,” said Warnock when asked about Roberts ahead of the Stoke game.

“There are certain games where you look at the opponents and not necessarily think you could get away with it, but just know you could give him an opportunity in the area.

“There’s no point in playing him in an area he’s not comfortable. For example, my lads at the minute, if they’re playing wide, are having to chase full-backs. That’s no Patrick’s game really.

“It’s just a matter of trying to get him in the right areas when I put him on or when he plays. He’s training hard enough.”

New Boro signing Duncan Watmore also appears to have moved ahead of Roberts in the pecking order after scoring twice in Wednesday’s 2-1 win over Swansea at the Riverside.

The former Sunderland forward was only offered a short-term deal until January but Warnock has been extremely impressed with the player’s attitude and performances in training.

“I don’t think he can do much more than score two goals to give himself a good cause,” said Warnock when quizzed on Watmore’s contract situation.

“Let’s see what happens though. There’s no pressure on Duncan. We’ve got to be careful with him because of his problems in the past.

“But things are going well for him right now and, touch wood, long may it continue.”
