Boro had won four of their last five Championship games ahead of the game at Craven Cottage, but were facing their third game in the space of seven days.

Some fans put the display down to tiredness while others were more concerned.

Here’s how some supporters reacted to the result on social media.

@Matt_Rowney: Yeah, Fulham were just the better team tonight. Just cos we won at Preston and WBA doesnt mean we have the right to win at Fulham. They're squad and their players were just too good. Shows what work we need to do to get back to that level.

@Smithy_MFC84: Tonight was just another learning curve in a season of change. Like JW said “you can’t get too high or too low” - let’s not lose sight of how far we’ve come. We eventually responded well, more than matching them at times. Not so long back we’d have lost that game heavily

@OrdinarySmog: Some poor performances tonight, possibly tiredness. Fulham were brilliant early on. We never really got into the game & never tested the GK. We’ve had a brilliant run but need to bounce back against Birmingham.

@VAWilkinson: Slow start again & we were poor for parts of that but a couple of months ago that could have been a repeat of the Leeds thrashing. Patrick Roberts is gonna be good for us . Onto Tuesday

@Neillygrownup: Those criticising the team selection were buzzing after Rudy battered Preston. JW knows his players, 3 games in 6 days takes its toll & certain players must have shown signs of fatigue. We played well for 65 minutes away to a team who were in the prem last year.

@jstringfellow88: Learn the lesson from tonight and move forward. Excited by the prospect of seeing wing tav and roberts on the pitch together in full flow

@sis_insights: Not too upset. To have a winning mentality, you’ve got to deal with defeat and not throw a panic. Move on quickly. In sport, you lose. No one can win every game.

@LengofRichardll: Got what the starting line up and tactics deserved tonight. Fulham not great to be fair, we made them look good

@reporterich: Fair result. We’ve paid the price for starting slowly for the second game in a row then not creating enough to come back. Plenty of heart & effort second half and #Boro fans top class again

@Kevscott1982: That was dreadful and back to pre-Dec #Boro. Poor from players & manager. Should have lost by 5/6. Not one player above 5/10 bar Tav who was taken off. Why?
