New signing Nicky Deverdics won't be just a bit part player at Hartlepool United

Craig Hignett made the attacking midfielder his first high-profile signing of the summer this week when he brought him to Pools on a free transfer from Dover Athletic.

Pools already have a highly-tuned midfield formation of Nicky Featherstone, Lewis Hawkins and Michael Woods, but Deverdics says he has come to Pools to play and not be sat in reserve.

The 28-year-old is looking to build on the season with the National League promotion contenders when he was one of the best midfielders in the fifth tier.

“I am here to play,” he told SportMail.

“I didn’t miss one minute in the National League last season for Dover.

“The only exception was the last game of the regular season when the gaffer rested the lads ahead of the play-offs.

“I played every minute and in November was made captain so I was used to the responsibility.

“I’m not shy and like being one of the main figures.

“I don’t intend to be a bit-part player, my aim is to hit the ground running and help the lads get up the top end of the league.”

Deverdics is a player accustomed to scoring - and winning.

Last season, he scored 16 times as the Whites finished fifth in the National League.

Dover though missed out on a place in the Football League, losing 2-1 on aggregate in the [play-off semi-finals to Forest Green.

But his mentality is geared towards success and he hopes to play a major role for a Pools side looking to go places under Hignett and first-team coach Curtis Fleming.

“The boys were unlucky not to go all the way last season,” said the Newcastle United product. “We had a good season.

“I’m used to being in a team that’s quite successful.

“When I knew I was moving I didn’t just want it to be in a side from the league above but one doing well.

“I want to be in a team winning games and playing my part.

“Yes, I know Hartlepool has had a bit of a struggle in recent seasons but, by all accounts, since Craig and Curtis have come in things have been on the rise.

“I can’t wait to get started.”
