ALAN Pardew has challenged his fringe players to show they’re good enough to play for Newcastle United tonight.

Pardew will make a number of changes for the club’s Capital One Cup tie at Morecambe.

Rob Elliott, Haris Vuckic, Sammy Ameobi, Dan Gosling and Gael Bigirimana could all start at the Globe Arena.

Newcastle have suffered a series of domestic cup disappointments under Pardew.

And a number of those who play will have involved in the FA Cup defeats to Brighton and Hove Albion - the club has twice lost at the Amex Stadium in two seasons - and Stevenage.

“We’ve paid a lot of money for some of these players,” Pardew told SportMail.

“I thought last year (against Brighton) some of their performances didn’t warrant their price tags.

“I’m looking to one or two of this team to show me that they should be in the squad because it is a big, big game for this football club.

“We all know we haven’t won or scored yet (in two Premier League games).

“I’m putting my faith in a few of my players, because I need to.

“We have 23 professionals in our squad. Some of them we have paid £2-3m for. We want to see proper performances.

“I think that it would give us a great boost if they could actually put in performances that make us think ‘wow, hold on a minute!’”

United have sold their 1,800-ticket allocation for the tie, which is expected to be a sell out.

“I hope that (the fans) can see players out there that they don’t always see a lot of,” added Pardew.

“I hope they see people they warm to, and that they can see why players like that were brought to the football club.

“We’ve brought them here - now they have to justify it.

“In view of that, it’s a mixed bag of experienced players and people who need to step up.”

Pardew will be without injured pair Cheik Tiote and Mike Williamson, while goalkeeper Tim Krul is doubtful with a minor problem.
