Carver a good option at Newcastle – Harper

NEWCASTLE United are in safe hands with John Carver – who has a “good opportunity” to secure the manager’s job on a permanent basis.

That’s the view of Steve Harper, who spent many years working under the United caretaker manager during his time at the club.

Harper left Newcastle for Hull City in 2013 after 20 years with the Magpies, and has watched from afar since Alan Pardew’s likely switch to Crystal Palace was made public.

He feels a win against Burnley tomorrow would put Carver firmly in the frame to be Pardew’s long-term successor.

Goalkeeper Harper told talkSPORT: “John has got a good opportunity. I know him very well and the club is certainly in very good hands.

“John has got vast experience. He is black and white through and through, but he has travelled the world and he has been caretaker manager previously, not just at Newcastle but elsewhere.

“They are certainly in good hands and if they can get a positive result against Burnley that would put John in with a great chance of getting the job.

“Newcastle fans just want somebody that wins football matches and if that was to be a Geordie at the helm then that would be ideal for them.

“It doesn’t matter which club it is, fans will want big-name managers but ultimately it comes down to winning games and John has got a good chance to do that tomorrow.”
