Don’t let ex-QPR star Loic Remy leave says Newcastle United legend

LOAN Ranger Loic Remy shouldn’t be allowed to leave Newcastle United once his deal expires.

That’s the message former Magpie Steve Harper has fired at the Toon hierachy after seeing the French striker become an instant hit on Tyneside.

Remy has scored five goals in his last three Premier League games, with his brace against Cardiff City on Saturday winning Newcastle the game.

Ex-United goalkeeper Harper has been impressed by the QPR man, who is at St James’s Park until the end of the season after Newcastle paid a £2million loan fee.

It is unclear whether director of football Joe Kinnear negotiated a clause in the deal which allows them to sign the 26-year-old permanently in the summer, but Harper has urged his old club to do everything in their power to keep him.

“I’ve been very impressed by Remy,” said Harper.

“Sign him up immediately, that would be my message.

“Hopefully, when you go into a loan agreement there would have been a fee agreed, which you can usually trigger at any time.

“That would certainly give all of the supporters a lift, to see Remy signed up sooner rather than later.”

Remy was part of a front three at Cardiff which included the recalled Papiss Demba Cisse, who had been dropped for the game at Everton after a goalless start to the Premier League campaign.

The Senegal striker did find the net in the Capital One Cup against Leeds, however, and Harper – who faced the striker in training every week for 18 months – has backed his old team-mate to work up a dream partnership with Remy.

Asked if Cisse would come good, Harper said: “Yeah, he is an instinctive sort of player.

“Maybe when you’re suffering from a drop in confidence, you think about things a little bit too much.

“Papiss is that sort of off-the-cuff, instinctive-type player and hopefully he’ll be banging them in in training and his confidence will come back.

“Then, if he starts firing on all cylinders and Remy’s scoring goals, Newcastle will be a very dangerous proposition.”
