SIEM de Jong has been told he can’t expect to walk into Alan Pardew’s Newcastle United starting XI.
The forward has recovered from a calf injury in time to make Pardew’s squad for tomorrow’s visit to Villa Park.
De Jong, signed from Ajax this summer, is expected to be one of the first names on Pardew’s teamsheet this season.
But the 25-year-old could start the Aston Villa game from the bench.
“Siem has trained all week and will be in the squad, so there’s good news on that front,” said Pardew.
“I think he is keen to start. We will have to wait and see if he is ready, but his enthusiasm is good, and his CV and quality speak for themselves.
“Hopefully, he can produce a great season for us.”
While United lost to Manchester City on the opening weekend of the season, Pardew was heartened by the team’s performance in the 2-0 defeat.
Pardew added: “Siem has to earn the right to play.
“Whether he is ready 100 per cent for this weekend, I’m not sure, we will decide that.”
