Gosling scores in Newcastle Utd’s behind-closed-doors defeat to Liverpool

DAN Gosling was on target for a Newcastle United XI in a behind-closed-doors defeat to Liverpool this afternoon.

The midfielder netted from close range after being set up by Adam Campbell in a 3-1 loss to Brendan Rodgers’s side at the club’s Melwood training centre.

Daniel Sturridge scored two penalties for Liverpool, with Luis Alberto scoring the other goal.

Gabriel Obertan and Yoan Gouffran were among those involved for Newcastle.

The fixture was arranged to top-up the players’ fitness ahead of the club’s season-opener at Manchester City on August 19.

United completed their formal pre-season programme on Saturday with a 1-1 draw against Braga at St James’s Park.

Meanwhile, South Shields-born goalkeeper Steve Simonsen is on trial at Rangers.

Ibrox manager Ally McCoist said: “I think he’s had one or two other offers from other places which he has had to weigh up. We’ll have a chat.”
