NEWCASTLE United’s Under-21s held Manchester City to a goalless draw last night.
Assistant manager John Carver and coaches Steve Stone and Andy Woodman were at Whitley Park to watch the club’s penultimate Under-21 Premier League game of the season.
Newcastle were captained by midfielder Gael Bigirimana, while Devante Cole, son of former United striker Andy, was in Patrick Vieira’s visiting team.
Greg Olley had Newcastle’s best first-half chance, the midfielder striking a first-time shot from a flighted Dan Barlaser ball.
United’s Hartlepool-born goalkeeper Jonathan Mitchell made a series of saves late in the second half to keep City at bay, and Cole struck the post in front of a crowd of 386 at Whitley Park.
Peter Beardsley’s second string take on Blyth Spartans at St James’s Park in the final of the Northumberland Senior Cup on April 22 (7pm).
And second-from-bottom Newcastle end their league campaign with a home fixture against Arsenal at Whitley Park on April 25 (1pm).
