TOM Heardman came off the bench to claim a point for Newcastle United’s Under-21s tonight.

Heardman netted in a 1-1 draw against Glyn Hodges’s Stoke City side at St James’s Park.

Peter Beardley’s Newcastle, captained by Lubomir Satka, dominated the first half, but they couldn’t put away the chances that came their way.

Robbie Parry put the visitors ahead late in the Under-21 Premier League game, but Heardman levelled from close range.

Peter Beardley’s Newcastle, captained by Lubomir Satka, dominated the first half, but they couldn’t put away the chances that came their way.

Defender Jamie Sterry shot narrowly wide from distance after a 17th-minute Dan Barlaser corner dropped to him, and midfielder Liam Smith put another effort wide a minute later.

Forward Callum Roberts, back from a loan spell at Gateshead, set up striker Adam Armstrong later in the half after a making a powerful run into the box, but Stoke goalkeeper Daniel Gyollai was able to smother his effort.

Roberts himself shot over after Armstrong laid the ball off to him, and the half ended goalless.

Beardsley replaced Roberts with Alex Gilliead in the 60th minute, but it was Heardman – Newcastle’s second substitute – who went on to have a say in the outcome of the game.

Gyollai diverted a shot from Heardman wide of his goal with his legs before Stoke got their breakthrough in the 76th minute.

Parry volleyed a cross from Joel Taylor past Freddie Woodman in the 76th minute, but United were levelled two minutes later thanks to Heardman, who finished from close range after good work from Armstrong on the left.

Newcastle finished the match strongly, and midfielder Liam Smith forced a save from Gyollai with a fierce shot.

But Beardsley’s side couldn’t get a second goal.
