Perez scored 16 goals in 34 appearances for Tenerife in Spain’s second division last term before moving to St James’s Park in the summer.

“I want to thank my ex-team-mates from Tenerife for this trophy,” said Perez. “Without them it wouldn’t have been possible.”

He was also named as the division’s Best Attacking Midfielder at a star-studded ceremony.

Perez was given special dispension to travel to Spain for the ceremony by United ahead of tomorrow’s fourth-round Capital One Cup tie against Manchester City at Eastlands.

Real Madrid’s Cristiano Ronaldo, meanwhile, as named as La Liga’s Best Player.

Ronaldo’s team-mate Sergio Ramos was given the Best Defender award.
