Florian Thauvin is set to return to Olympique Marseille on loan, according to reports in France.
Thauvin joined Newcastle United last summer in a £12m deal which also saw Remy Cabella go the other way, initially on loan.
But the 22-year-old has struggled to establish himself in Steve McClaren's starting XI.
And the winger was booed by fans on his last appearance for the club, the 1-0 FA Cup defeat to Watford.
L'Equipe report that Newcastle and OM have been in talks over a loan deal for Thauvin, who could return to the Stade Velodrome for the rest of the season.
Thauvin missed Tuesday night's 3-3 draw against Manchester United with a knock suffered at Vicarage Road.
Talks are understood to be ongoing between the two clubs, and there could be movement over the next 24 hours.
