DELIGHTED TO SIGN ... Newcastle striker Yoan Gouffran.

STRIKE star Yoan Gouffran has been tipped to bring goals to Newcastle – by his new team-mate Mapou Yanga-Mbiwa.

Gouffran last night completed his £1.5m move to Tyneside from Bordeaux.

The 26-year-old will be tasked with replacing Demba Ba, who signed for Chelsea earlier this month.

Ba remains Newcastle’s top scorer this season, and United desperately need someone to replace his goals.

Gouffran, a pacy, versatile frontman who can operate on either flank or through the middle, is likely to be paired alongside Papiss Demba Cisse in Newcastle’s attack.

And Yanga-Mwiba, having played against him on numerous occasions for Montpellier, has backed his new team-mate to be a hit in the Premier League.

“I have met him several times, and played against him in the French league,” said Yanga-Mwiba. “He is the type of player that gives us defenders a lot of work, he makes us work very hard.

“He runs deep, collects the ball, and holds it up very well.

“He lets the team get forward, and gives the team chances to counter attack.

“He’s good on the ball, and that would be something very useful for the team.”

Gouffran signed a four-and-a-half year contract yesterday, having only had six months left on his deal at Bordeaux.

He has netted eight goals in Ligue 1 this season, after bagging 14 last term, and has also scored four times in the Europa League.

He said: “I am really proud to have joined this fantastic club.

“Throughout the last few years I have enjoyed every moment of my time at Bordeaux, but all good things must come to an end, and it was time for a new challenge.

“The challenge of playing for one of the most famous teams in England, with all of its history and its famous support, is very exciting.”

Goffran has already played at St James’s Park this season, lining up for Bordeaux in their 3-0 Europa League defeat back in November.

Magpies manager Alan Pardew said: “Yoan comes to the club with a great pedigree and, like the other signings we have made this month, is a player who will add considerable strength to our squad.

“I liked the look of him when we played Bordeaux at St James’s’ Park earlier this season - pacy, direct and intelligent - and those are qualities I like in a footballer.

“I am sure he will quickly adapt to the rigours and intensity of the Premier League and play an important role for us for the remainder of the season.”
