SHOLA Ameobi’s gunning for more European goals as Newcastle United prepare to return to the continent.
Ameobi’s the club’s second-highest goalscorer in Europe with 12 strikes.
Only Alan Shearer – who netted 30 times against continental teams during his long career at St James’s Park – has scored more than him against European opposition.
The club was yesterday drawn against Greek side Atromitos FC in the competition’s final qualifying round, with the two-legged tie to be played on August 22 or 23 and 29 or 30.
And Ameobi – who was involved in Newcastle’s last two games in Athens, against Olympiakos and Panionios, in the 2004/05 season – is relishing the club’s return to the European stage.
United qualified for the Europa League after finishing fifth in the Premier League last season.
“What we did last season was fantastic,” Ameobi said.
“Personally, I wanted to see the club back in Europe having tasted it in the early 2000s.
“It’s great for the city and great for the fans. It’s something I’m really looking forward to.”
