NEWCASTLE United are sweating on the fitness of Daryl Janmaat – after the defender was forced off against Manchester City.
Janmaat left the field as a precaution in the 71st minute of this evening’s 5-0 hammering at the Etihad Stadium.
Head coach John Carver is already faced with a defensive crisis, with Paul Dummett having this week been ruled out for up to 12 weeks.
And Carver – who lost Jack Colback to a two-game suspension after the midfielder picked up his 10th booking of the season – will hope that the problem suffered by Janmaat will not sidelined him.
Newcastle had a disastrous start against the Premier League champions, with Vurnon Anita having conceded a penalty, converted by Sergio Aguero, in the first minute.
Samir Nasri doubled City’s advantage in the 12th minute, and Edin Dzeko put the home side 3-0 up before the break.
David Silva struck twice in the second half.
Asked about the team’s start, Carver said: “Absolutely dreadful. All your plans in place and you concede a stupid goal within the first couple of minutes.
“No matter what you do through the week to prepare for games like this – and it’s hard enough coming here anyway – you shoot yourself in the foot in the first minute then it’s an uphill task.
“We were two down in 12 minutes. After the first goal we actually settled down a little bit. But we lost possession and it ended up in the back of the net.”
