Newcastle United coach resigns after dressing-room bust-up following derby defeat

RESIGNED: Willie Donachie
RESIGNED: Willie Donachie

NEWCASTLE United’s reserve team manager Willie Donachie has sensationally resigned tonight on another tumultuous day for the club.

Donachie, who has been with the Magpies’ Under-21s for three years, had been suspended earlier today after allegations he had struck defender Remie Streete after the second string’s derby defeat against Sunderland on Monday night.

Newcastle were expected to hold an internal investigation into the incident, but Donachie has since decided to quit his role.

A club statement said: “Newcastle United can confirm that Willie Donachie has resigned from his position as reserve team manager with immediate effect.

“The club will be making no further comment.”

Donachie is the second senior member of staff to quit this week, following on from director of football Joe Kinnear’s resignation on Monday night.
