ALAN Pardew has confirmed Newcastle United’s interest in signing Bafetimbi Gomis.

The club is in talks with Olympique Lyonnais over a move for the £8million-rated striker, who is also wanted by Aston Villa.

Lyon’s owner, Jean-Michel Aulas, revealed this week that Newcastle and Villa had both made a move for Gomis.

And Pardew – whose side take on Portuguese club Rio Ave in Vila do Conde tonight – is hopeful a deal can swiftly be concluded, with Gomis said to be keen on a move to Newcastle.

“The Lyon president has come out and said we are involved with Gomis – and I can confirm that we are,” said Pardew.

The France forward, who interested United during Kevin Keegan’s second spell in charge, is an international colleague of Yohan Cabaye, Mathieu Debuchy, Moussa Sissoko and Mapou Yanga-Mbiwa.

And their influence could prove decisive in the club’s efforts.

Pardew is looking to sign two strikers this summer, though should Papiss Demba Cisse leave – he is in dispute with the club over shirt sponsors Wonga – he would be left needing another forward.

Another of his targets is Aston Villa’s Darren Bent.

Despite concerns at the size of the club’s squad – it was found wanting last season – Pardew has admitted there could be another exit, most likely midfielder Dan Gosling who is is expected to join Crystal Palace.

“We are trying to strengthen our attacking area,” added Pardew.

“In midfield and at the back, we’re comfortable.

“I really feel that there’s a player or two that moves on because of a little overload in midfield.”

Meanwhile, Liverpool have been linked with a move for Hatem Ben Arfa.
