Newcastle Utd look set to lose out on Gomis to Swansea City

FREE AGENT ... Gomis.
FREE AGENT ... Gomis.

BAFETIMBI Gomis won’t be arriving at Newcastle United this summer – as the long-coveted striker is set to sign for Swansea City.

The St Etienne striker was a target for the club last summer.

But the proposed move with broke down because of the fees demanded by those working on the deal.

With Gomis a free agent, he was looking for a substantial wage.

And Swansea, according to reports in France, have clinched a deal for the 28-year-old, leaving United to look elsewhere for striking reinforcements, with Ecuador’s in-form forward Enner Valencia an option.

But the value of three-goal Valencia – who plays for Mexican side Pachuca – has soared since the start of the World Cup.

And that could price Newcastle out of the market.

There is likely to be movement out of Swansea should Gomis, as expected, complete his move to South Wales.

However, Swansea’s Wilfried Bony, reportedly a summer target for a number of clubs, has ruled out a move to St James’s Park.

The striker’s agent told SportMail earlier this month that the club should have signed him from Vitesse Arnhem last summer when he was available for £10m.

Intriguingly, Michu’s Swansea future is also far from certain.

The 28-year-old – who was prolific in his first season in the Premier League – is rated in the £12m bracket by his club and could be on the move before the transfer window closes.

But SportMail understands that Michu is not among United’s primary targets.

That could yet change – the transfer market is largely at a standstill because of the World Cup – and the Spain international would be a popular acquisition on Tyneside.

Meanwhile, Tottenham Hotspur have again been linked with a move for Newcastle goalkeeper Tim Krul.

It has been reported that the club is lining up a £10m move for Holland international Krul, who was outstanding in United’s win at White Hart Lane last season.

Tottenham’s Hugo Lloris, France’s first-choice goalkeeper, has been linked with a summer move to Paris Saint-Germain.
