NEWCASTLE United’s bid to sign striker Luuk de Jong this month may go right to the wire.

The Magpies have targeted the Dutch star after he fell down the pecking order at Borussia Monchengladbach.

Newcastle are hoping to tie up a loan deal for the 23-year-old until the end of the season, but sources close to the player insist there has been little progress made in negotiations so far.

De Jong is in Turkey with Borussia as they continue their mid-season break with a training camp.

The Bundesliga starts back up again on January 24, and it is doubtful whether any deal will be in place before then.

United are prepared to be patient and wait until the latter stages of the transfer window in order to get their man, and haven’t ruled out going back in for Lyon striker Bafetimbi Gomis either, while they have also had Auxerre’s France Under-21 forward Paul-Georges Ntep watched.

Meanwhile, Gael Bigirimana suffered an ankle injury in United’s 4-1 Under-21 Premier League defeat away to Tottenham Hotspur on Tuesday.

The 20-year-old midfielder was substituted early in the second half.

Bigirimana – who has made just one first-team appearance this season – is a candidate for a loan spell along with South Tynesider Remie Streete.
