JOHN Carver had the best of times – and the worst of times – at tomorrow’s opponents Cardiff City.

Newcastle United’s assistant manager joined the club after failing to make a first-team breakthrough at St James’s Park.

However, just 13 games into his career at Ninian Park he suffered the injury that would ultimately end his playing career.

Carver still retains a fond affection for Cardiff, and is looking forward to returning with Newcastle.

“I had a good time there,” Carver said.

“Unfortunately, it was where my career ended because of injury.

“I went there as a 20-year-old, and loved it. The people were great, and the fans were fantastic.

“At the old stadium, Ninian Park, there was a great atmosphere when there was a good crowd.

“I’ve been back with Plymouth and Leeds, but this will be my first time with Newcastle.

“I’ve still got some friends down there, and it’ll be good to see them.”
