ALAN Pardew won’t be naming a vice-captain at Newcastle United.

But long-serving Steve Harper will be asked to help new skipper Fabricio Coloccini at St James’s Park.

Pardew this month named Coloccini as Kevin Nolan’s successor as captain.

And it had been thought he would also appoint a vice-captain, as has been done in previous seasons.

However, Pardew today insisted he doesn’t feel the need to name another skipper given the leadership he feels he has in his dressing room ahead of the new campaign.

Coloccini, however, will be absent tomorrow at Darlington when the club open their pre-season campaign, when Joey Barton will captain Pardew’s team.

“I won’t have a vice-captain – we don’t need one, and I’ve never had one,” Pardew said.

“We’ve got leadership in the team – I don’t think it’s an issue, I really don’t.

“But Steve Harper will probably play a role for the club in terms of appearances off the field and things Colo isn’t as clued up on.

“Harps is important on that front. He’s a local lad, and understands the area.”
