Rolando Aarons stars for Newcastle Utd in win over Schalke

ROLANDO Aarons was the star of the show as Newcastle United comfortably beat Schalke 04 at the Veltins Arena this afternoon.

The teenager scored one goal and set up another for Emmanuel Riviere, with Remy Cabella also finding the net in what was a convincing 3-1 win over the German club in Gelsenkirchen.

Cabella’s goal came on what was only his second appearance for the club, with the assist coming from debutant Facundo Ferreyra, signed today on a season-long loan from Shakhtar Donetsk.

Donis Avdijaj scored a late consolation for the home side, though many of the club’s fans had already left the stadium by the time he found the net.

But it was not enough for the team to win the four-team Schalke 04 Cup.

The trophy was lifted by Malaga, who beat Newcastle 3-1 yesterday and West Ham United 2-0 this afternoon.

After withstanding a spell of Schalke pressure, Newcastle took the lead.

Aarons charged upfield after taking the ball inside his own half, and the winger delivered a fine cross from the left for Riviere, who beat his man and headed past Ralf Fahrmann at the near post.

And it was Jamaican-born Aarons, signed from Bristol City two years ago, who scored United’s second goal.

The 18-year-old broke up the left and delivered a cross-cum-shot which sailed over Fahrmann and into the far corner of the net.

Ferreyra and Cabella came off the bench after the goal.

And Ferreyra rolled the ball to Cabella 72nd minute after winning possession, with the forward running to the edge of the box before scoring with a low shot.

Newcastle, backed by several hundred fans at the Veltins Arena, conceded a 90th-minute goal.

United are next in action on Tuesday, when they travel to Huddersfield Town.
