NEWCASTLE United’s stadium will revert to the name St James’s Park under the new Wonga sponsorship deal, it was announced today.
The payday lending company will become the club’s shirt sponsor from the start of the 2013-14 season.
And the deal also includes the naming rights to the stadium, which will revert to its original name, St James’s Park.
United managing director Derek Llambias said: “It’s the biggest sponsorship deal in Newcastle’s history.
“It’s no small number and shows a commitment by Wonga to ourselves.
“Giving the naming rights back is a fantastic gesture.”
Club owner Mike Ashley angered fans last year by renaming the famous old ground the Sports Direct Arena, after his sportswear business.
Reverting to the traditional name is sure to placate some of those who felt Wonga wasn’t an appropriate backer for the club.
