Newcastle United have not had an approach from Crystal Palace for captain Fabricio Coloccini.

Coloccini missed this afternoon’s friendly against Sheffield United with an Achilles problem.

The 33-year-old was pictured in Jesmond while his team-mates turned out at Bramall Lane for Chris Morgan’s testimonial.

Palace, managed by Alan Pardew, have been linked with a move for Coloccini, who is yet to appear for his club this pre-season.

But Newcastle head coach Steve McClaren says the club has not had a bid for the Argentina international, who he labelled a “first-class professional”.

“We’ve had no official approach,” McClaren told Sky Sports. “Colo’s been working with us on and off nursing his Achilles and getting through some work.

“He’s been a first-class professional.

“I came through the door and he’s the captain. Like everyone else, we want to see him on the field and playing for this team.”

Newcastle, backed by around 2,000 travelling fans, drew 2-2 with Sheffield United.

Georginio Wijnaldum and Siem de Jong were on target for McClaren’s side.
