Sunderland NOT chasing Newcastle Utd target Gomis

WANTED MAN ... Bafetimbi Gomis.

SUNDERLAND are NOT chasing French striker Bafetimbi Gomis, despite a raft of media reporting otherwise over the last few days.

It has been claimed that the Black Cats have entered the race for the 28-year-old long-term Newcastle United target.

But that’s simply not the case, in fact Sunderland have never been in pursuit of the Lyon forward, whose contract with the French club has now run out.

Whatever the source of the rumour - be it ‘creative’ journalism, internet mischief-making or agent speculation - the Black Cats have no interest in the Bosman free agent who is currently trying to milk the most lucrative deal on the market.

Newcastle have been tracking him for a couple of years now but there efforts to land him have so far been unsuccessful.

It has been reported by French newspaper L’Equipe that Newcastle have offered the striker a £2m signing-on fee and wages of £75,000 a week.

But it is thought Gomis himself would prefer a move to Turkey, with Fenerbahce and Galatasaray interested.

Now Sunderland, who are desperate to strengthen their goalscoring options, are also being linked with a move for Gomis.

Sunderland currently have plenty of strikers on their books to call on - Steven Fletcher, Jozy Altidore, Connor Wickham, Nacho Scocco and Danny Graham.

But only Wickham looks assured of a long-term future at Sunderland.

Graham is set to be off-loaded on loan or permanent sale over the summer while Scocco has spoken of being unsettled at Sunderland and Poyet may look to cash in the striker he spent £3.2m on in January.

Poyet has spoken of his belief that Altidore might still have something to offer Sunderland.

But after scoring only twice for the Black Cats last season the big American might be sold on if the right offer comes along.

Fletcher meanwhile, a £12m Martin O’Neill signing, scored ony three times in an injury-disrupted season and again, the club might listen to offers if an acceptable one is made.

Whoever comes or goes up front for Sunderland though, Bafetimbi Gomis is not on the radar.
