GAEL Bigirimana returned home from England’s disappointing Under-20 World Cup campaign with just one minute’s football under his belt.

Peter Taylor’s side bowed out of the competition on Saturday night after losing 2-0 to Egypt in the Turkish city of Bursa.

Bigirimana made just one brief substitute’s appearance – despite impressing for Newcastle United last season after his move from Coventry.

Taylor preferred to use his less experienced midfield players in the competition.

And 19-year-old Bigirimana – who started the second leg of Newcastle’s Europa League quarter-final against Benfica in April – came off the bench in England’s opening group game against Iraq, which ended 2-2.

Reflecting on the Egypt defeat, Taylor said: “I thought it was probably our worst performance since we’ve been here – even though we created a lot of chances.

“But if you don’t take your chances, football always punishes you.”

England’s Under-21s failed to get out of the group stage of the European Championships last month.
