Steve McClaren says referee Andre Marriner “lost a little bit of control” of Newcastle United’s game against Arsenal.

An own goal from Fabricio Coloccini decided Saturday’s Premier League match at St James’s Park.

But the main talking point was Marriner’s performance.

The West Midlands-based official booked seven players – and sent off striker Aleksandar Mitrovic.

Mitrovic was dismissed in the 16th minute for a clumsy challenge on Arsenal’s Francis Coquelin, who was able to continue after treatment.

And Newcastle head coach McClaren said: “I couldn’t believe the sending off.

“You can’t win with 10 men. All you can do is show spirit and fight, and they showed that in abundance.

“I couldn’t fault the team, I couldn’t fault what they did, and I didn’t think it was a seven yellow and one red game.

“It’s a football match and you have to compete, and I just feel at times the referee lost a little bit of control.”

The result left United 18th in the Premier League, level on points with basement club Sunderland, with four games played.
