After a tight and cagey affair which Woodgate admitted ‘wasn't the greatest spectacle’, there were positives and negatives to take from the match at the Riverside.

Here’s how some supporters reacted on social media.

@kieranjcrossman: Shotton and Ayala were good tonight but neither can pass a ball, Bola’s scared to go forward and Browne was shocking but who cares we actually won a game up the boro

@Matt_Rowney: Despite the refs best efforts we hung on! Not the prettiest performance but at this stage it really doesn’t matter. Woodgate has his first win. Up the Boro!

@ONE_ROPER: Lots of unforced errors in 1st half from at least 5 players. Showed a lot more steel in 2nd half but still a lot of improvement needed.

@Smithy_MFC84: In a game short on moments of real quality, just how satisfyingly brilliant was Assombalonga’s header? Not to mention the perfectly whipped cross by Howson too.

@guvpaul1: 3 points important but I feel the formation doesn’t suit our players out of position looked like they hadn’t played together I’m not sure if it’s confidence or what but something has to change

@Twe12thman: 3 points is all that matters. For now…

@Kevscott1982: Big win tonight for Woodgate & #Boro. Played awful and could have been 3-0 down when an amazing cross by Howson put it on a plate for Britt. We looked much better when our League 1 players went off

@Jordan_Lowrie: I didn’t think it was a good game at all but woodgate needed that first win, he realised that and went 5 at the back with the 2 wingers dropping back into wing backs to see out the game. I'd of took a scrappy 1-0 before the game. Might have freedom to play vs Millwall now.

@burkey1981: Slightly worried about Woodgates high press approach. It was more like headless chickens at times, 2 & 3 Boro chasing same Wigan player leaving spaces all over. Midfield looked knackered at end. Needs sorting or a decent team will welly us

@ablemarrow: Well a wins a win I guess. But we are in trouble against decent teams. Howson MOTM again.
