Emanuele Giaccherini will remain at Sunderland next season, despite an injury-hit campaign, his agent has claimed.
Giaccherini has only returned to the first-team fold for the last two games after a miserable season which has seen him restricted to just 10 Premier League appearances due to ankle and groin injuries.
The Italian international’s Sunderland tenure has been one of ‘what if?’ after making a sporadic impact since arriving at the Stadium of Light in a £7million deal two years ago.
Sunderland are understood to be keen to persist with Giaccherini, yet the 30-year-old has been the subject of constant speculation linking him with a return to his homeland - AC Milan the latest club to be credited with an interest.
But Giaccherini’s agent, Furio Valcareggi, told the Italian press: “He will remain at Sunderland.
“The squad has achieved safety and now that he has recovered from his injury I won’t exclude that (Antonio) Conte (Italy manager) will also remember about him.”
