Gary Bennett: Sunderland must get manager appointment right

GARY Bennett says it is vital Sunderland do their due diligence before appointing Paolo Di Canio’s successor.

And the ex-Black Cats skipper turned radio pundit feels that if the club wants to take its time finding the right man, it should do exactly that.

“This is such an important decision that the club has to get it right,” he pointed out.

“And if they want to give it long consideration then they should do that - Kevin Ball is a safe pair of hands as caretaker manager and he’ll make sure the club hangs together while a decision is taken.

“I’ve got no inside track on who the new man will be, but the one thing I would say to the club is: Do your homework!

“I think they really have to examine things very closely before making their decision and they should consult the media surrounding the target they have in mind, they should consult former players and talk to the potential candidate’s previous clubs to get as full a picture as they can.

“You can’t guarantee you’ll get it right but you can at least narrow the odds of getting it wrong.

“And given Sunderland’s plight with the manager who has just gone, they’ve got to do better this time.”

Di Canio was a controversial appointment when he succeeded Martin O’Neill at Sunderland in April with a storm of negative publicity over his right-wing politics accompanying his arrival at the Stadium of Light

Controversy was never too far away with the outspoken Di Canio and things finally unravelled at the weekend - just seven months after his arrival - when players revolted over his methods and man-management skills.

Bennett said: “You have to say that he was the wrong appointment when you see how things have worked out.

“And the one thing Sunderland have to do now is get the right person in who will be able to turn around a very difficult situation.”
