THE injury which forced Lee Cattermole to limp off the pitch just 38 minutes into Saturday’s game against Swansea is not serious.
The skipper has been plagued by knee injuries during his Sunderland career and it was feared he might have done more damage after challenging awkwardly for a ball on Saturday.
But it was confirmed after the game that he had only suffered a dead leg – an injury which should not prevent him playing against Liverpool in Sunderland’s next game, just under a fortnight away.
Manager Martin O’Neill will be pleased about that, with several players struggling for fitness.
Steven Fletcher and Stephane Sessengon have had disrupted pre-seasons while new signing Danny Rose, who has played little football recently was omitted at the weekend because O’Neill did not want to risk playing three players who were short of match fitness.
The manager said: “It’s early in the season and it takes a few games for players to really get warmed up and start hitting their stride.”
