SUNDERLAND Under-21s suffered only a second defeat in seven outings, going down 3-0 at Chelsea today.
The Black Cats came closest of either side in a spiky opening 45 minutes in their Barclays U21 Premier League Division One clash when Lynden Gooch fired inches wide at Chelsea’s Cobham training ground.
But three second-half goals condemned Sunderland to a heavy defeat in the capital.
Within a minute of the restart, Ruben Loftus-Cheek, who made his first-team debut for Chelsea in the Champions League last week, swept home John Swift’s cross.
Charly Musonda then doubled the advantage when he fired into the bottom corner.
Tom McNamee made a brilliant goal-line clearance to deny Chelsea a third, but the reprieve was only temporary as Swift went past three Sunderland defenders before converting an excellent individual goal.
