SUNDERLAND will be without two key players for Wednesday night’s trip to Liverpool.
Left-back Marcos Alonso made a miserable afternoon for Sunderland at Norwich City even worse on Saturday when he was sent off in stoppage time after he was handed a second yellow card for a deliberate handball.
The subsequent one-match suspension will see Alonso ruled out of the trip to Anfield, with former Liverpool defender Andrea Dossena expected to take the place of the Spaniard, who has been an ever-present in the Premier League since arriving on loan from Fiorentina in January.
But Sunderland will also be without on-loan Liverpool frontman Fabio Borini, who is ineligible to face his parent club.
With Borini unavailable and Steven Fletcher injured, Gus Poyet will have little choice than to persist with Jozy Altidore up front on Merseyside.
Altidore extended his goalless run to 19 games after being recalled to the starting XI at Carrow Road.
But with fellow frontman Nacho Scocco also struggling for form, Altidore is expected to keep his place as Sunderland face the first of their games in hand on their relegation rivals.
