Those players released at the end of their Sunderland contracts are due to be confirmed today in the Premier League's retained lists.
All top flight clubs will announce which of their out-of-contract players they intend to keep or let go when their deals expire.
Wes Brown, Steven Fletcher, Danny Graham and Steve Harper are the four members of the first-team squad whose contracts reach an end this month and none are expected to be kept on.
Sunderland have been pro-active in tying down those players they do wish to keep, with Jermain Defoe and Patrick van Aanholt both signing new contracts this week.
And goalkeeper Vito Mannone could be the next to agree fresh terms with discussions underway over extending the Italian's deal.
Mannone only has another 12 months remaining on his Sunderland contract and proved his worth with a key contribution to the Black Cats remaining in the Premier League.
