Former Newcastle United striker Alan Shearer's visit to the Academy of Light has been making the news today.

Shearer has been speaking with Sunderland boss Sam Allardyce for a feature to be shown on BBC's Football Focus tomorrow, ahead of the Black Cats' clash against Stoke.

In the programme, Allardyce claims the job is not proving to be as daunting as he first feared when he succeeded Dick Advocaat last month.

"I knew it was going to be difficult, but taking it as early as I did was about getting to grips with it for 30 games," he said.

Allardyce is on the look-out for fresh blood in January, although he has challenged his existing players to show that he doesn't need wholesale reinforcements in the New Year.

One player who Sunderland are looking at though is QPR's Charlie Austin, despite the striker's pledge that he wants to remain at Loftus Road until his contract expires next summer.

Meanwhile, the departed Liam Bridcutt says he is unsure if he has any long-term future at Sunderland after joining Leeds United on loan until January.

Bridcutt finalised a move to Elland Road yesterday and could stay at Leeds until the end of the season.
