GUS POYET insists Sunderland are moving “very fast” in the transfer market, with Inter Milan’s Ricky Alvarez and Celtic’s Virgil van Dijk reportedly on the radar.
Sunderland have just five days to make further additions to their squad before the window shuts, with Poyet looking to add at least two players to his ranks – a left-sided forward and a central defender, while he would also ideally like to sign a central midfielder.
Widespread reports in Italy last night indicated Sunderland were close to signing Argentine international winger Alvarez on a season-long loan, with a view to a permanent switch.
Atletico Madrid have been chasing Alvarez, who has made 90 appearances for Inter since joining in a £12million deal three years ago, yet Sunderland are reportedly in pole position for the 26-year-old.
Alvarez would be an alternative to Fabio Borini, if Sunderland ultimately miss out on the Liverpool man, with the Black Cats also making an inquiry with Lille for ex-Chelsea striker Salomon Kalou last week.
There have also been reports that Sunderland had bid £6m for Celtic defender van Dijk after failing in a loan bid for Atletico centre-half Toby Alderweireld.
Sunderland have been watching van Dijk over recent weeks, with Poyet keeping an eye on the Dutchman since he was in charge at Brighton
Poyet was coy on transfers after last night’s Capital One Cup victory at Birmingham, but he said: “We’re moving, we’re moving very fast because it’s getting close.
“I’m confident we’ll be doing something.”
He then added: “You’re going to be surprised.”
Alvarez becomes the latest to be linked with the club as a credible alternative to Borini.
