SUNDERLAND are reported to have tested the water with a £4million bid for Swansea and Wales defender Ashley Williams.
The 29-year-old is understood to be a player Gus Poyet has identified as being vital to rebuilding his squad after last season’s relegation battle.
Williams has excellent leadership skills, having guided Swansea to the Capital One Cup a year ago, as well as being a key part of their rise to the Premier League.
Sunderland have acted swiftly in a bid to snap up Williams and tempt Swansea with a reasonable bid for a player they could lose on a free next summer.
The centre-half has just 12 months left on his contract, and Swansea need to decide whether to cash in on him now.
