SCUNTHORPE United have seen a loan bid for Sunderland hot prospect Duncan Watmore rejected.
Sunderland have received a host of enquiries from Football League clubs to take Watmore on loan since the summer, with the forward consistently impressing for the Black Cats Under-21s.
But Sunderland believe that Watmore’s progress is currently best-served by training at the Academy of Light, unless they receive a uniquely attractive loan offer.
League One Scunthorpe are one of those to have been rebuffed by the Black Cats, although Iron boss Russ Wilcox didn’t refer to Watmore by name.
“We have to be totally respectful towards Sunderland,” Wilcox told BBC Humberside.
“Sunderland certainly know we’re after the player.
“We’ve made three or four enquiries right from back in pre-season.
“It’s a player we keep monitoring, a player we keep looking at, a player we’d like to see here at Glanford Park.
“But the answer at the moment is no.”
Watmore penned a one-year extension to his contract at the Stadium of Light last week, which will keep him tied to Sunderland until the summer of 2016.
