RUMOURS ... Emanuele Giaccherini, right, is said by his agent to be happy in England.

EMANUELE Giaccherini’s agent insists there is no substance to speculation that the Sunderland winger could return to Serie A during the January transfer window.

Giaccherini has made 13 starts for the Black Cats since arriving from reigning Italian champions Juventus in a £6.8million summer deal.

But the 28-year-old has still been linked with a January move to Inter Milan, albeit the Italian outfit have distanced themselves from the reports.

However, Giaccherini’s agent, Giulio Marinelli, has rubbished the talk and insists the Italian international, who is hopeful of keeping his place in the squad for next summer’s World Cup, is happy at the Stadium of Light, despite Sunderland’s troubles at the foot of the Premier League table.

“These are just baseless rumours,” Marinelli told the Italian media.“Emanuele is happy in England, he has settled well both in the team and in the English way of life.

“The Premier League is a beautiful competition, perhaps the best in Europe. The stadiums are great and the quality of life is exceptional.

“The only drawback at this time is the team’s performance but the squad is good and I am convinced that they will climb up the table.

“His personal goal is still to go to the World Cup.”

Sunderland head coach Gus Poyet has made it clear that Giaccherini has a key role to play in the club’s relegation scrap.

Last month, Poyet compared his former Chelsea team-mate Gianfranco Zola to Giaccherini, with the latter boasting the ability to inject greater creativity into Sunderland’s attack.

“When we got close to the box at Chelsea, we gave it to Gianfranco Zola. He would always do something with it,” Poyet said.

“That’s why he was so good because he would find the final pass, the shot or the runner. That’s quality.

“We’re trying to get Giaccherini to do that for us.

“We’ve seen him play for Italy and the position he played (in last month’s 2-2 draw against Nigeria) where he linked things. We can improve as a team to use the characteristics of the players.”
