John O'Shea was passed fit after a scare over a calf injury, with the Sunderland captain partnering ex-Manchester United team-mate Wes Brown in defence.
Vito Mannone returned in goal, with fellow stopper Jordan Pickford preferred on the bench to Costel Pantilimon.
