VIDEO: Sunderland star Lee Cattermole delighted to win North East Player of the Year award

LEE Cattermole has spoken of his delight after being awarded with his North East Football Writers’ Player of the Year trophy at a star-studded event.

The Sunderland midfielder has been in inspirational form for the Black Cats throughout 2014 having forced his way back into the first team picture.

He had been sidelined by former boss Paolo di Canio but has been a revelation under Gus Poyet.

Having helped Sunderland avoid relegation last season, he also played a pivotal role in their run to the League Cup final at Wembley.

The 26-year-old - man of the match in the goalless draw with Chelsea at the Stadium of Light on Saturday - spoke to the Echo at the awards ceremony at Ramside Hall on Sunday night.

The event was attended by Poyet, club captain John O’Shea plus club legend Niall Quinn, Middlesbrough boss Aitor Karanka and Hartlepool United manager Paul Murray.
