Sunderland winger Duncan Watmore netted his second goal in the Toulon Tournament, but England Under-20s succumbed to a 2-1 defeat to Mexico tonight.
Watmore made the breakthrough when he chased down a ball through the middle and headed past the advancing Mexican keeper into an empty net.
Mexico beat Sunderland keeper Jordan Pickford to level early in the second half, Marco Bueno heading a Daniel Hernandez left-wing cross in off the bar.
Martin Zuniga then hit Mexico’s winner 10 minutes from time.
Defeat leaves England on four points from three games, three points behind Mexico. ivory Coast, who have completed their fixtures, and Morocco are both on five points
England, under the management of Aidy Boothroyd, previously drew with Morocco, when Watmore was among the scorers, and beat Ivory Coast.
Their final group clash is against China on Friday, while Mexico meet Morocco.
The group winners – now guaranteed to be either Mexico or Morocco – move into the final, with the runners-up facing a third-place play-off.
