HARTLEPOOL United’s second string have been beaten 2-1 by Gateshead in a league game at the International Stadium.

Keeper Joe Cracknell, who has joined the Sky Bet League Two on trial from Hull City, played in goal for Pools as their search for a new Number 2 to Scott Flinders continues.

He was unable to prevent Gateshead taking a 2-0 lead.

On-loan Newcastle United striker Tom Heardman opened the scoring with a right-footed curler from 20 yards before Jon Shaw doubled the lead after being given too much space to turn and finish from close range.

Pools got one back after the break through Dan Jones, the left-back connecting with a Jordan Richards cross to head home.

Reserve boss Sam Collins named a strong line-up and partnered Scott Fenwick and Marlon Harewood together up front for the Final Third Development League game.

It’s the second time this month that the two sides have met at reserve level, Fenwick netted twice when Pools won 2-1 in a league cup clash a fortnight ago.

Pools: Cracknell, Richards (Carr), Nearney, Bates, Jones, Green, Hawkins, Smith, Holden, Harewood (Blackford), Fenwick (Wood).

Subs Not Used: Dawson, Jewson.
