KARATE’S Aaron Swales has booked his seat on the plane for the European championships.
Swales impressed England coaches at selections and in recent tournaments to earn his badge once more in the U84kilo category for the championships in Tenerife in May.
He faces further selections at the end of this month – hoping to also earn a place in the men’s team event.
It is another great achievement for 2nd Dan Swales, who trains at the East Durham Ishinryu club in Peterlee.
He missed out on an individual slot at the 2010 Euros – but fought in the five-man team event. But the 24-year-old stepped up a weight in September – a wise move which saw him claim the title at the British International Open.
Swales, who is based at East Durham College, said: “I’m thrilled with my selection. I was struggling a little with the U-75kg weight and I just felt a little off the pace. When me and my coach decided to step up it was a big decision because I’m at the lighter end of that division.”
